Abstract

A mysterious monogram was stamped into the librettos prepared for performances at the Académie royale de musique between 1673 and 1699. It also appears on most printed editions of Lully's operas (even on one by his son Jean-Louis, "Zéphire et Flore") published by Ballard from 1677 to 1689. Combining the letters "L" and "D", the monogram was attributed to Lully by Lois Rosow without an explanation of its function. The examination of some copies of Lully's scores at the Bibliothèque nationale de France reveals that the monogram was always stamped at the same place for the same title, and sometimes surprisingly, without ink. This study leads to the hypothesis that Lully used it to prove that the librettos and scores stored at the Ballard's shop were still his property. Thus, the letters "L" and "D", which could stand for "Lully Depositor", may also be a sign that the composer did not trust his publisher.
